Anyone out there got any favourite locations for listening, as in from, and not of a particular place?
My AR keeps me fit as I'm usually found up a hill at the weekends having a listen to places further away than I can hear from the house. Last week from half way down Dundonald Hill in Ayrshire, on the Dundonald village side of it, I could pull in Central Region Police, in particular a patrol car in Viewforth, Stirling. He was on the M9.
The place I stopped at is a sideroad (track) heading to the right when heading down hill. The track leads to a place called High Lees.
Another place is Dalgarven in Kilwinning. From either Whitehurst Park or pass Dalgarven Mill, head up to four houses (two sets of two, Smithstone Terrace) and then up past the old open cast mine. Turn left at the top, and the view is rather good at times as well. It's from there I can pull in the HQ for Cumbrian traffic police on at least 2 of their channels, and most of south eastern Scottish police on vhf.
Weather conditions make all the difference to though, and it can be a good way of testing your aerials if you have more than one. The time of day, and even, which day also decides how much you hear. First thing on a Sunday isn't clever.
Loudoun Hill near Darvel (between there and Strathaven on the A71) is another good place for pulling in Glasgow uhf police, even the ATIS at Edinburgh Airport. It's not such a good locus for southern stuff.
I've heard police on vhf as far as Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy. I once heard the safety stewards at Celtic Park as well.
There is a pub by the road, The Loudoun, take the immediate left if coming in from Kilmarnock, head up the hill by road, and eventually there is a car park. The walk from the car park to the top of the hill looks worse than it is. It only takes about 5 - 10 minutes. Walking from the car park to the base of the hill takes longer than climbing the actual hill. Even my racing bike has been on top of that hill.
It was more effort pushing the bike from the main road to the car park than anything else.
Depending on the chill factor tomorrow (Sunday) I might take a toddle to one of these places tomorrow.
